Information Is Beautiful

I have selected The Sunscreen Smokescreen data. Reading through the data given the data which initially stood out to me was
A taxonomy of hipster coffee-shop names
Out of your hands
Cocktails
Chicks rule
How much does Hollywood earn?
The Sunscreen Smokescreen
These titles where the ones that interested me to read more but after reading through the data 'Out of your hands' and 'The sunscreen Smokescreen' Stood out to me the most. I could visualise the data in my head as I read through but decided on 'The Sunscreen Smokescreen as a few ideas popped into my head how I would layout the data and this information genuinely interested me.

Read the data set thoroughly and consider a story / narrative that you wish to communicate
Above shows the layout of the data given on Sunscreen Smokescreen. Along the bottom are some tabs which are a few ideas of narratives I could chose to communicate, I think I might chose a few of these as part of my story, definitely not them all as it would be too overwhelming to communicate in one A4 graphic.

Begin planning, sketching, visualising this narrative (low fidelity - pencil sketches)

Determine Format
I thought about the best way to present my narrative and decided that animation would be the best format to teach people about the suns rays in an effective way. They could visually see the information and how the rays and sun cream works.
I began by sketching how I would like the animation to look, above is how I wanted to narrate the rays reaching earths ground. I then brought the sketch into illustrator and then Photoshop to add colour.
Experimenting new Format
I wasn't happy with my animation skills and decided to start again. I looked at creating an illustrated poster formatt instead but couldn't get across as much information in one image as I wanted to.
I then began Illustrating this style further into artboards into the sequence I would want to animate them but struggled with this too and realised I needed to take a step back and learn some animation techniques.
I began with a youtube tutorial on how to animate the earth spinning and was happier with how much cleaner and smoother this looked.

Excecution
To practise basic animation most of the tutorials I watched used basic characters so I created three different characters to animate which then started to develope into my final project 2. Below are some sketches of my planning and thinking as I developed the charcters into the animation.
Above is the final drawings and names I gave the characters that I decided to go with and the stick men legs surrounding them was me trying to work out the sequence of the legs to make a walking sequence for the characters.
I broke down the information I wanted each character to talking about and drew how I wanted the animation to look before I brought the Illustrated images into after affects to animate.
I then was planning the sequence of the story and the order in which I wanted them to go in the style of a story board which helped me to picture it together and plan better what scenes could be cut or needed to be included.
Final Spin character created in illustrator
Final Squirt character
Final Sunny character
I became more and more confident with after affects using the anchor point tools and transistion tools to rotate and repostion and scale subtle movements in the drawings to bring them to life.
To animate the mouths as if they where talking and reacting I illustrated 6 mouths showing different expressions and opened these in a separated compostion in after affects and and used time remapping to play the mouths over the animation of the character itself sped up to make it look like the characters mouths where moving.
